John Busby awarded Legend of the Ride

Go Back

John ‘Buzz’ Busby was honoured with the prestigious ‘Legend of the Ride’ award at the Albany Dinner, a recognition of his unwavering dedication to the Hawaiian Ride for Youth. A sponsor and rider for over 20 years, Buzz has played an instrumental role in the event’s success.

Buzz’s contributions to this cause are nothing short of extraordinary. Through his leadership as Managing Director of Budget Truck and Car Rental, and with the unwavering support of his family, Buzz has been a cornerstone of this event since its inception. Back in 2003, when the very first ride rolled out, it was Buzz who supplied the trucks and support vehicles. And every year since, he has ensured that this tradition continues, embodying a commitment that has endured over time.

In 2005, Buzz took his dedication a step further by entering the first Budget Team into the Ride. Not one to rest on his laurels, he has continued to field a Budget Team every single year since. This year, the team – led by Cameron Tweedie and joined by Chris Rimmer, Peter Hairsine, and first-year rider Chris Morris – carried on that proud tradition.

Buzz’s contributions go beyond logistics and teams. He pioneered the event’s fundraising model with the legendary Budget Race Day, generously sponsored riders, and supported the creation of the first training jersey. His leadership continues to this day, sponsoring and riding in the 2 Day Challenge Ride this year. And let’s not forget his personal commitment – riding in over 10 rides himself, often accompanied by the iconic presence of “Elvis” along the routes, spreading joy with the unforgettable mantra, “Everybody loves everybody.”

Buzz has not only supported this event but also inspired all of us with passion, generosity, and unwavering commitment. He and the Busby family have made it their mission to help those in need within our community. It’s not just his motto – “Give what you can unconditionally… don’t expect anything in return (but good things follow good people)” – it’s the way he lives his life.
